Iringa, a region located in the beautiful Southern Highlands of Tanzania, has a long tradition in basket weaving, and is home to many of the great craftsmen our team works with. The Iringa basket is woven in one piece from Milulu grass, traditionally used to carry grains after harvest or for storage in the home. After harvesting and drying the grass, it is carefully woven by female weavers in different traditional patterns and colors. One basket can take up to two weeks to weave!
With their timeless look and traditional feel, these baskets are a true addition of craftsmanship into your home.
Having lived and worked alongside these artisans for many years and speaking the language fluently, our founder Jolien makes sure each weaver gets paid an honest price for their baskets. By buying a basket you ensure the preservation of a rich history in basket weaving from the Hehe people in Iringa.
Note: The nature of handmade goods. Our products will have slight variations in size and design, this is a natural occurrence in handmade goods, and one of the reasons we love them so.
